We have recently made some exciting changes to our extension which adds the W3C Digital Data Layer to Magento. The Digital Data Layer (DDL) is a standardised way of exposing data on your eCommerce site. If you implement to the specification, it will mean that you will not have to duplicate your work to expose data to multiple providers (e.g. an analytics provider and a tag management provider). It works with all versions of Magento, from Community to Enterprise.
The changes improve performance, give greater control over where your product data is exposed, and help developers.
This particularly benefits sites with a lot of products on each page, for example list pages that show hundreds of products.
Nobody likes to wait around when browsing the web and it is especially important when potential customers are browsing your store. In the latest version of the Magento Digital Data Layer extension, we are using a new data collection method that leverages the temporary product data already stored in Magento's registry, avoiding having to read it again. This means the extension has a minimal impact on page load times, even for large pages.
In previous versions of the Magento Digital Data Layer extension product exposure was either on or off for all pages.
With the latest update, clients are able to specify which types of pages they would like to expose product data on as well as add product exposure to their custom page layouts.
To assist developers when we have included exposure for action name, module name, page type and layout handlers when in debug mode. This is great to help diagnose any problems and help point you in the right direction.
